Curtains for IO
Noren curtains developed and woven site-specifically for IO - a Japanese teahouse.
In the Noren curtains for IO, I worked with a weaving technique called ikat, which I learned from a master weaver during a travel to India. It is a very slow process, where you start by measuring the threads and then tie around them in specific patterns. The threads are then dyed, and the tied areas are untied again - like this the threads will still be white in the former tied areas. The curtains are woven in two layers, with a different stripe and check pattern on each layer. Because of the two layers and the transparency of the weave, the patterns interacts with light and creates an ever-changing expression. In this project I also developed a series of placemats for tea serving.
