Ikat in Orissa

I travelled to Orissa in India in the beginning of 2023 to stay with a master weaver in ikat weaving and learn from him and his community. Ikat is a reserve dye technique, where you start by tying specific patterns on the threads. Then you dye the threads, and after dyeing the tied areas are untied again reaveling a patterned thread. When weaving with the ikat threads, the patterns will get a bit blurry, no matter how precisely the process is carried out - the blur is what makes ikat recognizable and beautiful. 
During my time in Orissa, we developed a series of ikat design together, which is shown below.
