Volumes hidden in the loom
This series investigates the space in the loom — a space built thread by thread; soft, flexible and welcoming.
In the project, I worked with complex and technical constructions on the loom while aiming to create objects that appear effortless - like shapes that were hiding in the loom all along and are now being revealed. The works can be transformed from flat to three-dimensional and back again. By working with light paper threads and airy weavings the works become almost translucent and ethereal. The series proposes new ways of producing woven objects and new ways of building a space. The woven sculptures are fully constructed on the loom. I wove them in multi-layered constructions with floating threads in between the layers. They are flat when woven, but after cutting them off, the shape is revealed by pulling in the floating threads. I created these works on a digital TC2 loom. This loom is a manual handloom that allows you to control each thread individually with a black or a white pixel. This makes it possible to work with very complex constructions, such as the ones in these weavings. Just one wrong pixel could make the layers stick together.
